History of Elephanta Caves
The name Elephanta came from big status of Elephant which is now shifted to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Garden , Mumbai. The island was known previously by Gharapuri.The island consist of seven caves.. On the statues you can see Chalukyan influence. The depiction of mountains and clouds and the hairstyles of women are reminiscent of Gupta art.
Elephanta Caves located off the coast of the Mumbai Harbour which is closed to Gateway of India in South Mumbai.Yo can reach Elephanta Caves to take ferry(Boat) rides from Gate Of India.Ferry will take around 1 hours from Gate of India to Elephanta Caves.
This island have houses marvelous cave temples built between the 5th to 8th century. The island got it’s name from the Portuguuese who found a massive rock cut elephant statue at the entrance of the island. There are three rock cut cave temples on the island, the largest one is the Shiva temple. It has a large statue of Mehsamurthi, or Lord Shiva with three heads  and around the cave you can spot many other statues of Shiva and his incarnations. This is good place to visit for 1 day picnic.

The ferry travel time is about an hour.Boat timings to Elephant island from Gateway Of India as following :
1.From Gateway first boat is at 9:00 AM and last boat at 3:00 PM
2.On Returning from Elephant first return boat is at 12:00 Noon and last at 5:30 PM

Boat Ticket :
Rs 150 to Rs 200 for two way, based on the type of boat.
Rs 125 for child

How to reach Elephanta Caves from Mumbai
You have to reach CST(Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal) Station or Churchgate station first via Mumbai Local train or BEST Bus.From Station you can take taxi for Gate Of India.From CST Station share taxi running which will take Rs 20 per passenger.Now you can buy ferry ticket from Gate Way of India for Elephanta Caves.

Note :
Avoid to go in monsoon season (June to August ) as boat schedules could get interrupted due to the rough seas and heavy rain.
